Trout Lake Community Centre, Vancouver

March 14, 2015

This centre is a new building situated in a beautiful park setting. Its complete rebuild was done in two phases – first, the rink, for use during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics; second, the community centre. It is incorporated into the park with most rooms having lake views. There are some attractive design features including three sets of glass doors allowing easy access between the hallway and outdoor areas, thus bringing the outdoors in. There’s a really nice and well-used playground just behind the centre.

Staff told us that when the automatic doors open on the north end near the information desk, a cold wind blows in. They wish they had two sets of doors (where one set closes before the second set opens).

Highlights

  • All the program areas, meeting rooms, fitness centre, community kitchen, and multi-purpose rooms are too small and have too little storage capacity.
  • Visually magnificent & rooms very nice but small – pottery studio smaller than previous one.
  • Staff identified problems with the design of the area where skaters put their skates on in the ice rink reception area: it’s very cramped. One good thing about it is that it is good for “controlled entry” events.
  • Staff gave up their staff room due to shortage of program space.
  • Lots of fantastic glass and wonderful views but difficult to clean the glass, and glare was an issue that had to be resolved with the installation of blinds in the gym and the rink.
  • Suggestion: ensure ownership issues are determined ahead of time; that is, ensure community space is not restricted to just one group (daycare space here is now “only” for daycare usage).
