Come learn about and examples of successful, multi-use community facilities from across Canada and beyond. Discuss how the Britannia Renewal project can learn from leading edge, dynamic and integrated community facilities.
“A key design considerati on [is] the integrati on of a diverse, urban mix of uses in a balanced way so the ensemble of programming and architecture is greater than the sum of the parts.” — Don Schmitt , Architect
Speaker: Don Schmitt, Architect (Diamond Schmitt Architects) A founding Principal of Diamond Schmitt, Donald Schmitt has 42 years of professional experience in the planning of large scale urban developments and in the design and construction of mixed-use developments that are innovative, functional and sustainably designed.
Since 2006, Don has been working on the Regent Park Master Plan and Revitalization – a project which has transformed the Regent Park community. The Daniels Spectrum Arts and Cultural Centre has become a central hub within the Regent Park neighbourhood, significantly changing the nature of public space for its residents. The Centre solidifies social interaction and cross-disciplinary involvement in the Arts. Don also led the revitalization of the award-winning Evergreen Brickworks Centre for Green Cities, a five-storey structure housing offices, classrooms and event space, developed around a central idea of connection between retail, leisure, inspiration, education, action and sustainability and is the first designated heritage site in Canada to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
