Edmonds Community Centre, Burnaby

March 14, 2015

We paid two visits to Edmonds — the first an impromptu one without a tour guide, and the second a guided tour. We thought it had a lot to offer us in the way of examples. It’s in a busy area near a SkyTrain station, the community is diverse, and the centre is bustling.

Edmonds has a pool with separate “lazy river” feature, a fitness area (with lots of great equipment), separated areas for teens and for seniors, gyms, a snack bar, public seating, and several meeting and multi-purpose rooms, both large and small. Multi-purpose rooms have sinks at two heights — one low for people in wheelchairs and children. In change rooms, our guide suggested that we should consider hose connections to facilitate cleaning, that we should install a large washer and dryer for staff use. For all design issues, he said we should ensure that all levels of staff and users are consulted in planning, that we have huge storage spaces to allow rooms to truly be multi-purpose. Both times we were there, this centre was very busy.

Highlights

  • Seating in grand foyer is not inviting, no backrests.
  • Double entry doors are too narrow.
  • Door-free access to washrooms is good, but staff told us that the hand dryers are so loud they are disruptive to nearby programs.
  • Pine beetle wood was used in construction.
