Hillcrest Centre, Vancouver

June 3, 2015

The construction of this centre was initiated as one of the facilities for the 2010 Winter Olympics. This site is adjacent to Queen Elizabeth Park and has park views. A very high-usage centre, the site includes a variety of private operators, including the Vancouver Curling Club and Phoenix Gymnastics. This site appears to be more of a sports centre than a community centre.

Pool change areas, although relatively new, are currently under review. Patrons and staff have expressed the need for more private universal change rooms.

Highlights

  • The meeting rooms are small and, as in many other centres, storage is insufficient.
  • Lots of glass; staff advised us that it is very expensive to clean.
  • Lots of glass; staff advised us that it is very expensive to clean.
  • Limited-ability change rooms need to be large enough for two wheelchairs and a hoist.
  • From opening day, pools have been used at capacity; there’s a need to plan for popularity.
