Poirier Community Centre, Coquitlam

September 3, 2015

Poirier is more of a recreation and sports centre than a full-fledged community centre. It is huge and impressive, with three very fancy ice surfaces (one of which is for curling), two Zambonis, dual pools, a fitness centre and fitness classes, and meeting rooms and social areas.

The ice surfaces are maxed out for prime time and are big income-generators for the centre. Because this site is heavily used by hockey players, a lot of attention has been paid to the effective movement of players carrying their cumbersome equipment in and out of the building. There is direct access from the parking lot into dressing rooms for teams; there are large, secure, and separate change rooms for both home and away teams. They also provide a place for parents and supporters to wait for players.

They’ve used a variety of coloured floor surfaces to break up long corridors.

Space is rented to private sports medicine and physiotherapy businesses, and the snack bar is also run by a private contractor. There is a physically separated seniors centre building across the street.
